Infrequently Asked Questions
The About page covers the nuts and bolts of what I do. Here's a little bit more that might not come up on a CV... |
- Q: Is it true that you are trained in stage combat? With swords?!
- A: Yes, it is true! Safety has always been important to me, as well as motivation. Choreography in the theatrical space includes furthering the story, and how actors move their bodies and the tactics they use in any given situation is driven by their characters. I started to learn about stage combat through the lense of safety, and it grew from there. I became trained in many styles including unarmed, rapier, rapier and dagger, broadsword, quarterstaff, whips, found weapons, and more, and was certified by the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD).
- Q: Do you still do work as an intimacy coordinator?
- A: When I was working in theater, many years ago, I would be brought in to choreograph scenes that depicted intimate moments. This was well before "intimacy coordinators" were a thing, and I applaud the directors and producers who saw the need for this ahead of the curve. This work is about the physical and emotional safety of the performers, as well as sharing the story with the audience. I am not called to do it much these days, but am open to the possibility if it's needed.
- Q: Is it true that you also sing? Any recordings available?
- A: I sing a lot less than I used to, but love to make music. My beloved is the lead musician in the family, and I joined him on a few tracks on the album "A Cup of Kindness" ... you can hear it HERE.
- Q: I heard that you once wrote lyrics for a parody song... about Kelp?!
- A: Indeed I did. The lyrics are all about the wonders of that fantastic seaweed, to the tune of the Beatles "Help!" The award-winning children's music duo Two of a Kind did a cover of it on one of their albums... you can hear it HERE.
